Since the early days of aviation\, weather has been one of the key aviation safety hazards. Weather-related incidents and accidents have been a concern in aviation for decades but recently we seen adverse weather appearing high on the list of factors contributing to accidents. It is timely to ask ourselves: What should the aviation industry do next to strengthen its weather resilience? \nThe 11th Safety Forum is scheduled for June 19–20\, 2024\, at EUROCONTROL headquarters in Brussels. The Forum is organised by Flight Safety Foundation in partnership with EUROCONTROL and the European Regions Airline Association. The theme of the 2024 Safety Forum is “Aviation Weather Resilience”.   \nBy focusing on weather risks and resilience management\, the Forum will provide insights and strategies to enhance safety measures and reduce the likelihood of weather-related incidents and accidents. \nReacting to weather-related safety risks can result in flight delays\, traffic disruptions\, diversions\, and cancelations\, causing inconvenience to passengers and substantial financial losses to airlines. Addressing weather risks can contribute to minimizing these disruptions and improving the overall passenger experience. \nAdvances in weather forecasting and data analytics have opened new possibilities for managing weather-related risks. The Forum will explore how cutting-edge technologies can be integrated into aviation operations to enhance decision-making\, planning\, and risk assessment. \nBringing together experts\, stakeholders\, and professionals from various fields\, including meteorology\, aviation operations\, and risk management\, the Forum aims to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing. Participants will exchange best practices\, lessons learned\, and innovative approaches to mitigating weather-related challenges. \nWith climate change leading to more frequent and severe weather events\, the aviation industry needs to adapt its strategies to effectively address these changes. The Forum could discuss how climate change impacts aviation operations and explore adaptive strategies for building resilience. \nGoing through an unprecedented change\, the aviation industry needs to reassess what new operational concepts\, new aviation actors\, the advance of automation and information technology mean for its weather services. The Forum will discuss the challenges and opportunities for aviation weather resilience that come with these changes. \nEffective weather risk management may require regulatory adjustments and policy changes. The Forum will provide a platform for discussions on necessary updates to regulations and standards to address evolving weather-related challenges. \nWeather-related risks affect various aspects of aviation\, from flight planning to air traffic control. The Forum will discuss the importance of training and education for aviation professionals to ensure that they are well-equipped to manage weather-related challenges. \nBy wisely building resilience before the weather strikes it is possible to minimise its effects and prepare for most efficient and safe recovery from these effects.
